WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases item upgrader kit level by +3. Each upgrade also boosts a random substat.

The upgraded gear typically has a more value in trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the requirement to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. However, the item Level Upgrade used to upgrade will remain in use for a long time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and is accessible at any time to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item, however they'll always be cheaper than purchasing new gear. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currency types.

Many locations have upgraders for their items in addition to the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount and a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded. It can also be boosted by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require several methods that are both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

Crests

It's also essential to use crests with care, since they are only used for one purpose. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the best gear you can locate, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that fill several slots. The discount on the account will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
