Lolita's Personality

Lolita's care

Sadly, she never had the chance to go back to the ocean.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also place her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, vowed to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to eventually open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. Lolita's Diet

Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to transfer the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother.
