Choosing a Large bedside baby bed Cot

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without the risk of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby is old enough to transition to an actual bed.

Size

Cots and cot beds differ in size, with cots being smaller than cot beds. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only used for children up to the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes available that are large and standard both of which convert into a cot/toddler bed. Selecting the larger of the two is a good option for children who want to sleep in it until the age of at least three years old.

Height

When selecting a bedside crib, choose one that can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It also needs to be able of being dropped to the ground so that you can pull your baby towards you during night feedings or to soothe. This feature is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C-section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is how low you want the base of your cot. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their infants from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest point, while some prefer a higher height to provide them with more stability. One of our mom testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It has an easily collapsible side that you can press at the press of a button.

Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device should only be used in the event that your baby can hold his head without assistance, which is typically around 6 months. This is because of the risk of suffocation. This will stop them from climbing out or falling out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of styles of bedside crib that range from basic to lavish. Another option is a swivelling footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. This is perfect for new mothers recovering from Caesarean sections, or those who need to remain in bed for long periods of time. Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and is equipped with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than some of the other bedside cribs we looked at, but it folds flat in its bag for travel, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mum home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib (Read More On this page), explaining how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. It is lightweight and easy to move. She also said that the swivelling bassinet base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to facilitate access, especially for new mums recovering from C-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is the fact that it is able to be raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed, comfort or change his or his or her diaper. This makes it perfect for new mothers recovering from a c-section. You should choose an option that lets you lower the bed's side with a simple button press. This allows you to lift your child up without having to get out of the bed. This is crucial, particularly as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You should also not add anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation, or injury, like pillows and duvets, which can cause babies to overheat.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product, such as gaps between the newborn bedside cot sleeper (adult bed) and the amazon bedside cot sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of imposing additional requirements for bedside sleepers, such as the requirement that they satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at least meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. The CPSC found, however that these requirements were not efficient or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that could be converted into different modes like play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multi-use bedside sleepers that would enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that is removable and can be permanently connected or disconnected when the item is not being used as an actual bassinet.

The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on 4-in-1 bedside crib sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when it decides on the final rule which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
